CATHY SOUGHTON

A qualified, accredited genealogist with over 30 years experience in historical research.

Having a degree in Medieval and Modern History, I have always been interested in local and family history and what started initially as a hobby, researching my own family history and those of friends and family, has developed into an enjoyable professional business where I do my utmost to provide an efficient, friendly and reliable service.

Over the years I have carried out family history, local history and house history research for hundreds of satisfied clients. Whilst the majority of clients are private individuals, research has also been carried out for a number of commercial companies including solicitors, architects, probate companies, TV companies, heritage societies and auction houses. I have written articles which have appeared in various genealogical publications and magazines both in the UK and USA and regularly write history columns for local magazines and give talks. I am a Member and current Secretary of the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives (AGRA), the professional body for genealogists in England and Wales which carries out a stringent assessment of the quality of work of applicants before approving membership. I am one of the regular ‘Ask the Experts’ at various Family History shows including Who Do You Think You Are and the Family Tree Live show.

Other qualifications include:-

  • Higher Certificate in Genealogy, Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (I.H.G.S) – a recognised professional genealogical qualification.

  • Post Graduate Certificate in Architectural History, University of Oxford. House history research is a specialised field and whilst many of the available documentary sources are those used by genealogists, as an architectural historian I can also investigate the structural history of a house.
